History
Ancient Years
During that period, where Koroni is now, used to be the ancient town of Asini. Ancient Koroni used to be where Petalidi is found nowadays. Its name derives either by the ancient town of Koronia of Viotia, or because of a ancient coin named “Koroni” that was found when the town’ s walls were being built.
Byzantine period
During the 7th and 8th century a.C. the citizens of ancient Koroni because of the Arab and Slavic assaults, decided to move in the acropolis of Asini. Since the 11th and 12th century Koroni makes part of the Byzantine empire, which with special permissions allowed the Venicians to trade on their own terms in this area. In 1204 a.C. with the citizens approval, the town passes under Franks sovereignty.
Venetian – Ottoman period
In 1205 Koroni was conquered by Crusaders of the 4th Crusade, and in 1209 passes under Venetian command. That is when the castle was built.
In 1500 the town after a siege, was conquered by the sultan Vayiazit the 2nd. In 1532, and only for two years the Genoan Andrea Doria held the town. In 1534 it was Hariedin Barbarossa’ s turn to take over the city for the Ottomans. After the 6th Venetian-turkish war, the town, together with the whole Pelloponese was part of the Venetian empire up to 1715. Then it was again under the Turkish command up to 1828 , when finally was handed over to French general Maison, and since then is part of the 1821’s neophyte Greek nation.
